LEARN NOW, STRUGGLE LESS LATER

As we continue to explore how to prepare for parenthood, one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself is to start learning now. The more you can educate yourself on what to expect, the smoother things will go once your baby arrives. Notice I said smoother....not perfect, stress-free, without problems, etc. just smoother.

Educating yourself can come in many different forms. From books, online articles, blogs, other people, classes, etc. If you put in the research, you will find there are many options for you. I do recommend that you make sure the information is coming from a reputable source. Two books that I found helpful personally and is also recommended at the PLC Health Clinic, is What to Expect When You're Expecting and What to Expect the First Year. These books are packed full of all kinds of key information! You don't need a ton of books on hand since most of us have access to the internet, but I do recommend having a couple and if you're going to have a couple, these are the two I would definitely have.

Everyone learns differently though, and some find it easier to absorb information through videos and discussions with others. This is where the PLC Health Clinic can be a great resource for you. We offer a wide range of classes that cover pregnancy, giving birth, infant care, parenting, potty training, etc. These classes can be done one on one with our trained staff or, once the Covid-19 Restrictions have been lifted, in a group with other moms. Sometimes it's helpful to be in class with others as they may think of questions or ideas that you haven't. If you're a client already, go ahead and schedule a class today. If not, you can schedule an intake and get involved after that.

Don't underestimate the education that can come from those who have already been through it. So often they have little quirks that worked for them that you'll never find in a book or video. Find someone that you trust, and bend their ear for some parenting advice. The other positive to this is that there is a good chance you'll get some good laughs in while listening to their parenting hits and misses. And laughter is the best medicine!

No matter how you learn best, just do it! You won't regret taking the time to educate yourself so that you can be the best mom possible. And as always, GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! No one is perfect or knows everything. The point is that you are trying and that can go a long way.
